With most of us spending the holidays at home with family in 2020 the focus on creating a welcoming holiday space is more important than ever. While traditional holiday décor never goes out of style, there are a few Christmas trends that have made their way to center stage this season making this year a great time to share the holiday spirit with loved ones in new and interesting ways.

Maximalism

This is certainly a trend that I have embraced for the holiday season. Building on the foundation of traditional décor, I love to layer in bright colours and bold patterns. The maximalist trend is a natural progression from fashion trends that have seen a rise in pattern and color in recent years. Creating a maximalism look isn’t always about buying more things, it’s about choosing items that have bigger impact. Using different types of materials and pattern is also a great way to add interest and impact- try combining velvet and plaid together! If you already own a neutral base palette of holiday red and greens, consider adding in blues, pinks or yellows to create and entirely new feel. To incorporate this trend at home add bold patterns using ribbon to you holiday tree, add unexpected elements like books or portraits to your fireplace mantle or incorporate textural elements like feathers to your winter greenery arrangements.

ANIMAL PRINT

Many of you know me well enough to know that in my opinion animal print never goes out of style! This popular fashion print has made its way into this year’s holiday décor in a big way.  If you are looking for a fashion forward look for 2020, be bold and add some leopard print to your holiday décor scheme. The easiest way to adopt this look is to incorporate a few new pieces into what you already own. You could use a leopard scarf as a table runner as one simple example! How about using leopard print ribbon to adorn your holiday gift? I have even designed a special leopard holiday bag this year for Kim Crawford Wine– wine and design! The perfect combo!

PERSONALIZATION

Creating personalized gifts and holiday décor is one of my favorite things to do for the Christmas season. This year is certainly all about the comforts of home and family- so personalizing as a trend is a lovely way to decorate and celebrate special loved ones! This year I will be adding beautiful, monogrammed napkins to my holiday dinner table. You can incorporate this heartfelt trend in a few other simple ways- try adding a pretty wood letter to your front door wreath or creating monogrammed stationary as a personalized gift to give.

STATUES

I love to add a little character to my holiday décor- incorporating statues into your home style ads a nice sculptural look to mantles, entry tables and even bookcases. This trend has been on the rise as we see more traditional elements incorporated into home décor to warm up spaces. Decorative plaster busts can be used to hold jewelry like necklaces, placed on a plinth to create interest in a hallway  or used as an interesting sturdy book end. During the holiday season, consider decorating your statue with some sparkly decorations for fun touch!

VINTAGE

Many of us have some vintage ornaments that we incorporate into our décor as part of yearly holiday traditions. This year additional vintage pieces may be exactly what you need to really bring your holiday décor to life!  One of my favorite thrift store finds are vintage brass candlesticks of all sizes. I use them on my holiday table with dripless white candles.  Another great way to add sparkle is to layer vintage dishes together on your holiday table. Mixing and matching patterns and colours creates a one of kind look. Check out local online consignment sellers or thrift stores for the best deals on beautiful dish ware.
