HOW TO CREATE A COZY BEDROOM
The snow is falling, the winds are blowing and to escape you’re curled up in your bedroom. This winter, we’ll likely continue to spend more and more time at home, so this is an opportunity to turn your bedroom into a cozy retreat. To help get you started, the interior design team at Amanda Aerin has developed eight tips to transform your bedroom into a luxurious haven.
UTILIZE NOOKS
If your space has an unused nook area, make the most of it. Taking an awkward corner or deep window and creating a reading nook complete with plush pillows in bold fabrics gives you both extra seating a flex space sanctuary.
PLAY WITH TEXTURE
Adding texture creates visual interest — and adding unique texture combinations to your space allows for both depth in design and cozy vibes. This bedroom inspiration from Urban Outfitters showcases a beautiful, textured macrame headboard paired with a softer rust orange pillow. These are two very different textures, yet work seamlessly together.
ADD IN LAYERS
One of the easiest ways to transform your bedroom into a modern cozy oasis is to utilize layers. You’ve probably heard the term layering in fashion — a tactic used to add dynamic elements — the same is said for interior design. Make your bed the focal point of the room by layering in soft linens, and don’t be afraid to mix colours and textures!
PLAY WITH PATTERNS
Mixing patterns can often seem intimidating, but when done right, can create a bedroom refuge that is just as playful as you are. As a rule of thumb, use at least three patterns in a room — combine a floral with a geometric pattern and then throw in a solid pop of colour.
WALLPAPER FOCAL POINT
Whether you want to create a whimsical escape or make an accent wall to frame your bed, wallpaper is a game-changing way to add personality to any room. From eye-catching florals to abstract shapes, wallpaper can exude a soulful ambience. This black and white handpainted print from de Gournay adds drama while whisking you away to a fantasy land while you curl up in bed.
CONSIDER LIGHTING
Soft warm lighting in the bedroom instantly creates a calming atmosphere. While overhead lighting can sometimes be too bright and harsh, opting for space-saving sconces on either side of the bed can provide a warm glow with the help of Edison bulbs.
BREATHE IN LIFE WITH PLANTS
Think about how much of the outdoors we try to bring indoors. Plants and natural elements breathe life into spaces. Beyond the aesthetic, plants reduce toxins in the air, improve air quality and can have a variety of aromatherapy benefits. So, incorporating plants into your bedroom design is an easy way to achieve a cozy sanctuary.
DARK HUES
While it may seem a little counter-intuitive to use dark colours in bedroom design, darker shades can result in more restful sleep. Sophisticated black walls as seen in this bedroom inspiration in Elle Decor, contrasts beautifully with white bedding and can act as a blissful way to start and end your day.
Although most of our time in our bedrooms is spent sleeping, your escape from the world should be thoughtfully designed for relaxation. Whether through incorporating plants or playing with texture, you should always indulge yourself in design that is conducive to a good night’s sleep.
